How to use the Change Equation to your advantage

For those who know me well, I love maths and equations… I find them beautiful because they simplify something seemingly complex.

What does this equation say?

We naturally resist change. We are attached to the status quo. This is probably an evolutionary trait: our brains and minds could not cope with constant change. Sometimes however things are too much and we see no alternative but change.

This equation explains when this “too much” happens. What does this mean? However dissatisfied you are with your life or career, if you have no alternative vision for what you want, no change will happen. Nothing.

The problem is that people often have no attractive vision for their career. They instinctively know they need a change, but (as this equation explains) they maintain the status quo or they take the first opportunity that comes along. Unfortunately it does not work very well.

NB: In the original equation, Beckhard and Harris added a 3rd factor which is “achievable first steps towards achieving the vision”. But it did not fit in the image ;-).
